Being a native New Englanda, the 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. I was raised walking in parades! One in particular was the Bicentennial parade, which was held in my hometown of Barrington, Rhode Island.
During the parade I wore old-fashioned dresses, and funny enough; I still have one hanging in my closet. The advice I give during my wardrobe consultations to donate what you no longer wear does not apply here! ;) For whatever reason, that dress needs to stay put in my closet (even if it is for an 8 year old!) I just can’t part with it. Too many fond memories are in that Yankee-looking frock!
Wearing the traditional red, white and blue is still the standard on this glorious Independence Day! So, on every flag-waving day, I try to dress in patriotic colors from head to toe.
Here’s my advice for looking your best during the 4th: For women, why not wear a blue jean skirt, a white blouse tied at the waist and some bright, red boat sneakers? For men, why not wear madras red, white and blue shorts, a white t-shirt and Sperry’s? And of course, be sure to wear a baseball hat if you’re planning to watch the all-American sport, baseball!
In Orleans, Cape Cod, there is usually a minor league baseball game playing where all the fans spread out their blankets, set up their chairs and watch a little bit of Americana! “Take me out to the ball game…” Btw, if you didn't know by now, I'm a RED SOX FAN!
To top off the 4th of July, there’s nothing like a good ol’ fashioned cookout, as they say back east, with burgers and dogs, watermelon and corn on the cob. Dessert? A cake decorated like an American flag with blueberries and strawberries on top of creamy white frosting. Mmmm…I can taste it now! Need some help planning your 4th of July event? Just ask!
Have a happy 4th!
