As I've mentioned in several of my previous Report posts, dancing is a big part of my life. I started ballet when I was 5 years old, then tapped my way into my teens, joined the dance troupe in college and now I just dance for fun!
I think dance can bring out many hidden talents. That’s why I love trying all styles – you never know what you’ll learn about yourself. I plan on taking an African dance class in San Francisco. I love to sway to the sound of a drumbeat and it brings back memories of one piece I truly enjoyed performing in during my dance troupe days. So if you’re thinking about taking a dance class, but not sure which one, I recommend thinking back to a time when you were truly happy dancing. Why not try a ballroom dance class or even a hip-hop dance class? It's cool to groove to the beat. Plus, it truly lifts your spirits. If you need help finding a group class or private instructor, just ask!
As you can probably tell from the photo above, I was instructed by a very strict ballet teacher named, Mrs. Goneconto. She was tall with her tight hair bun and long pointer in hand. She would tap, tap, tap the hardwood floor to remind us to, "point your toes!" I was so scared she was going to poke me with that pointer that I probably ended up pigeon-toed instead of pointed-toed! Needless to say, ballet was not my forté! On the upside, ballet taught me to stand straight with good posture (we had to walk and balance a book on our heads!) and walk with poise and confidence. It also taught me to love cultural arts.
The cultural arts are about exploring your creativity within your own environment. I recently attended a ballet performance choreographed by Artistic Director, Michael Lowe. Bravo to Lisa Shively, the Executive Director of the Menlowe Ballet Company who fulfilled her dream of creating a professional ballet company in the Menlo Park/Atherton community. The performances were whimsical, dramatic and lovely to the eye. I especially liked the colorful costumes that were carefully and meticulously chosen for each dance. The last dance called, "Surfside" was a fun and fashionable display of old-time bathing suits and caps. It was bright, beautiful and my guests and I were entertained enormously. If you live in the Bay Area, please attend their next ballet program on November 15-17. I promise you won’t fall asleep during one of these performances! Trust me, I'm the worst when it comes to a quiet, warm, dark room…ha!
Now, what do you wear to a ballet or any type of cultural performance, you say? I would always err on the conservative side. Which means, for women I’d suggest wearing a nice dress or cute shirt and skirt. For men, a stylish sports coat always works. If however, you're attending a more formal affair such as the Opening of the San Francisco Opera Ball, a ball gown is in order! Getting all glammed up for a night out on the town is an eye opener for all! Why not buy your tickets now to the Opera Ball in San Francisco on Friday, September 6th? Remember to make a hair and makeup appointment and be responsible with a designated driver or use a car service. Or, you could leave the planning up to me, all you have to do is just ask!
It's important to incorporate some type of culture into your daily life. If dance is not your desire, then go to a local museum or attend your child's school play. Grab a few family members or friends and make a day or evening out of it. You won’t regret it, and who knows, you may discover a new talent!
Dancing tip: It keeps you in great shape. Just ask Beyonce!
