Robin Laub, a Life Stylist

The Do's and Don'ts of a Photo Shoot

I recently did a personal photo shoot for some fun images and an animated gif of myself spinning in several different outfits that you’ll be seeing on my website today! It was a blast! Over the next seven months be on the lookout for my new blog series on The Report titled, “The Many Sides of Robin”. Each month I’ll feature one of the images from my photo shoot and tell you all about the entire look, where to find each piece, hair and makeup tips, places to wear it, etc. – it’s all to inspire you. I hope you’ll enjoy it!

Now, getting back to my photo shoot experience. I’m usually the stylist on photo shoots, not the model/stylist/producer/art director. So this was VERY new for me. I thought I’d share some tips with you, because you never know when you’ll have to get in front of the camera and make it work!

There are many steps to making a photo shoot successful:

Step 1 -- find a fashion photographer.
I interviewed five different fashion photographers from referrals and resources. After explaining my vision for the shoot, I learned that there was definitely a range of pricing based on a photographers experience and extras essential for a successful shoot.

Step 2 – review portfolios.
After determining your pricing parameters, be sure and view your selected photographer’s portfolios to get a sense of their style. That way you can select one that best suits all your needs.

Step 3 – book your shoot.
After you’ve selected your photographer, it’s time to book your shoot. Finalize a shoot date that works for your schedule, the photographers schedule and inform the photographer of your deadlines.

Step 4 – plan your wardrobe.
The more wardrobe changes you make on set, the longer your shoot, which means the more money you pay your photographer. Plan ahead so you can be stress-free on your shoot day. For my shoot I organized seven outfits including hairstyle, make-up, accessories, shoes, stockings and undergarments. I was able to complete my shoot in less than five hours total. Go me!

Step 5 – don’t forget hair & makeup.
Make hair and make-up appointments for the day of your shoot. For my shoot, a hair stylist and make-up artist was not needed as I was comfortable changing my hairstyle with each outfit and re-applying make-up. This saved me a lot of money.

Step 6  -- get your pictures.
After your shoot, don’t forget to coordinate with the photographer as to the finalization of the pictures, making selections, determining any retouching needs and how and when they’ll deliver your images to you.

Step 7 – enjoy!
I am very fortunate to say that my photographer, David Peterson Photography and Creative Director/Web designer Mark Elster are the best fashion artists for me! Look now on the sidebar and you’ll see the fun photos from my shoot on my website. How do you like the “Many Sides of Robin” twirl?
