Our pet Carmella is a Havanese dog that we call our “healer” from Havana, Cuba. Whenever anyone in the family is sick or in need of some extra TLC, she’ll sense this and lay right next to that person. It’s a comforting feeling. She is white, fluffy and very fashionable. ;) Some say dogs take on the look of their owner. What do you think?
We take very good care of Carmella because we consider her to be part of the family...and we love to pamper her. Here are some of our favorite ways to pamper a pet:
1. Make sure your pet has an annual visit at the veterinarian. At our last visit, it was evident that Carmella needed a good teeth cleaning. (I guess the chicken flavored toothpaste wasn’t cutting it? Ha!) In little dogs, such as a Havanese, tooth decay is prevalent. In order to prevent any premature extractions, have their teeth professionally cleaned by the vet. As a bonus, she also gets her toenails clipped. Now, that’s pampering! (Remember no nail polish! It’s toxic!)
2. Walk or run with your dog daily and spend quality time with them. Just as it’s important for humans to exercise regularly, it’s important for dogs, too! It’s a time for them to get social with every blade of grass and bush out there! Ha!
3. Socialize your pet. In our case, our dog should want to play with other dogs but doesn’t for some reason. Find out where the local dog parks are located in your area and let your dog run free. I recently took Carmella to Fort Funston in San Francisco, which has a trail that leads right down to the Pacific Ocean. Now, if only our dog liked other dogs, that would’ve been ideal. She’s a people person – what can I say? She’s like her owner.
4. Groom your pet. Whether you bring your pet to a professional groomer or bathe them in the privacy of your own home, a nice bath will certainly excite and energize any pet, plus it’s good for their overall health. In our instance, our dog goes bizerk after she dashes out of the bath and runs in circles so fast it makes your head spin. It’s the most hysterical thing to watch!
5. Give your pet some fun new toys. You can even use things you already have around the house. Do you have any stuffed animals that no longer get the love they once received from a toddler? Give it to your pet to play with!
6. Feed your pet with healthy meals and treats! A bone from the butcher? Some healthy, natural treats from the pet store? Our dog unfortunately cannot eat any table scraps or any treats because of her sensitive stomach, but a treat here and again for your pet is a good thing!
7. Bring your pet on a road trip! It’s hard leaving your loving pet at home when you’re going on a trip and kennels or luxury pet resorts (yes, they exist!) can be expensive when you travel a lot. So why not check out some dog-friendly hotels? Try PetFriendlyTravel.com. That’s how we found out that Carmel, CA was a perfect place for pets. Wait, is that why we named our dog, Carmella? ;)
8. Love, pat and cuddle your pet. Talk nicely and show affection to him/her. Treasure them! There’s nothing more soothing then snuggling with your furry, friend. Except, of course, if your pet is a snake. I think all they do is wrap their body around yours. Yikes!
No matter how you do it, pampering your pet is a great way to show how much you care for them and make them happy. Carmella loves us unconditionally and all she wants in return is to spend time with us! If you need anymore tips on pampering your pets, Just Ask!
Enjoy your pet!
