If you truly would like to get a feel for the Norwegian countryside, plan on taking one of the world’s most scenic seven-hour (371 km) train rides from Bergen to Oslo (or vice versa). Yes, you read that correctly—seven hours. But, they’re the most magical seven hours where you’ll sit comfortably watching the beautiful landscapes rush by. It’s a must do in Norway and highly recommended by your favorite adventure stylist! Ha!
Of course, flying is always quicker, but have you ever been swept away and entranced by fascinating scenery with glistening lakes, red brick wooden cabins, rolling rivers, waterfalls, fjords and sheep grazing all in one trip? This train journey “stole the show!” Think KYGO, Bergen-born DJ, songwriter, and record producer.
To make your train ride even more enjoyable, book the Komfort Wagon. It’s somewhat like traveling first class with free WIFI. ha! Book a seat in advance that faces the riding forward direction on the left side of the train, buy your favorite Norwegian foods ahead of time to snack on and enjoy the free cappuccinos on board. I recommend seats numbered 25 and 26.
It’s amazing how different and desolate the landscape can be between towns. And all those tunnels come whizzing by out of nowhere! Especially when I was right in the middle of taking a fabulous photo of a vibrant waterfall! Ufda!
I took this train ride in late May. There were snow-capped mountains, and in some places still, snow on the ground. I passed through logging towns, mountainous areas, gorgeous lakes with stunning light reflections and then boom—after the tunnel, bright white snowy mountains and icy lakes. Bring sunglasses, as it’s incredibly bright! I wondered when I passed through these barren areas, what does someone do out here? Maybe I’m too much of a city girl. Ha!
Over the course of the trip, I was overwhelmed by the majestic fjords. But certainly, a boat ride along the fjords or a helicopter ride (fonnafly.com) above them would be just as spectacular. Norway is filled with incredible nature including forests, agricultural and open fields. They’re all truly sights to be seen.
The Oslo-Bergen railway, what a way to see idyllic Norway! I can still smell the fresh air. If you’d like help planning your own railway adventure, Just Ask!
