Magical Madrid Moments—Part 1

My recent visit to the heart of Spain was a fascinating way to spend the Thanksgiving holiday. During my adventure in Madrid, I visited some of the finest museums, walked through the bohemian and colorful neighborhoods of Chueca and Malasana, enjoyed high-end shopping in the Salamanca district, experienced the exciting nightlife in the Atocha neighborhood and explored the tapas bars in the hip, fun and young area on Ponzano Street.

The old squares such as Plaza Mayor and Puerto del Sol are unique and charming. During my November visit, I was graced by their festively lit Christmas trees and hanging ornaments that adorned the cobbled side streets. People stay out partying during all hours of the night and early morning maintaining the vibrancy and reputation that Madrid is known for.

Tip: while in Madrid, learn to slow down because if you’re in a rush, well, good luck! Ha!

There was so much to see, do and eat I couldn’t wait to share all of my favorites with you! In the first of this three-part blog series, I’m sharing the best restaurants and things to eat. Yum!

Restaurants Not To Be Missed

1) Tatel is a who’s who Jetsetter type of place. In fact, Ronaldo, the big soccer player, was just spotted there. Too bad I can’t brag about bumping into him. Ha! There’s a roving singer who sings amongst the tables and a DJ that spins the tunes.

2) Ten Con Ten has an awesome ambience (it’s all about the ambience, isn’t it?). I had a delicious skillet of veggies with a glass of Egly-Ouriet.

3) Amazonico has gorgeous décor, but beware of the chorizo and the snarky service! Next time you see me, ask me about my story. :) Evidently, this place is IN right now.

4) Casa Lucio is very famous but very touristy. It’s located on the oldest and quaintest street in Madrid called Calle Cava Baja.

5) At Bocadillo de Jamón y Champan the Jamon Iberico sandwich and a bottle of champagne is the perfect combo for a picnic in Parque del Retiro. Afterwards, you can rent a small boat and leisurely paddle around the mini lake by the palace of Felipe IV.

6) If you’re a chocoholic and a night owl go to Chocolateria San Ginés It’s open 24 hours! The hot chocolate is so thick it’s like sipping syrup and the fried crunchy churros—well, if you forget to sprinkle the sugar on them they taste better with mustard. Haha!

7) If you crave seafood, Madrid is packed with restaurants serving great shellfish. I suggest stopping by any sidewalk cafe in Plaza Mayor for authentic paella. And don’t forget to eat at a mercado. If you’d like to know which are the best, Just Ask!
