Robin Laub, a Life Stylist

The Perfect Pitch

When I first started my life style business, I would sometimes stumble when someone asked what I did. “A life stylist - huh? What is that?”  So, I quickly learned that I had to craft a great response to the ol’ ”what do you do?” question.

While I was riding up an elevator, it came to me! An elevator pitch is what I needed. Ok, so that’s not true, I wasn’t riding in an elevator. But, I did know I needed a good response and I needed it ASAP. Ha! With the help of business professionals, I came up with a creative response. If we’ve met, I’m sure I’ve probably said it to you at an event.

What do I do? I create and curate fun and fashionable experiences for my clients. I help plan events, assist with wardrobe styling, and create adventure travel itineraries.

After saying all of that, I typically get the head tilt to the side look and an, “oh, that is so cool!” Then, my pitch is followed by more questions and conversation until they ask my favorite question — “how can I hire you?” My response is always, “Just Ask!” My elevator pitch is simple, to the point, and leaves people wanting to learn more.

Here are some easy tips for introducing yourself at parties and events:

1) When delivering your elevator pitch, look directly into your interested acquaintance’s eyes and say your pitch with eloquence and finesse. If it’s too long, it will sound salesy and people will be turned off. Be natural with it and show your passion. Practice makes perfect!

2) The perfect pitch will strike a conversation and then allow you to go in for the kill (aka sale). Ha! My pitch is just part of who I am and what I can deliver. It’s not always about landing a project, I’m just passionate about what I can offer people and I stand by it with integrity. Always leave a good impression. You never know when someone will need your services in the future.

3) Make your pitch impactful. I make sure to convey that my life style business saves my clients time so that they can enjoy life’s precious moments. Keep it simple and conversational.

4) Talk about how you can make a difference. For example, I tell people that the difference between me and others is that they actually get ME to plan, create and assist on every project. I don’t have a clan of people to do the work, it’s all ME and that’s where I differ from other event stylists, wardrobe stylists and adventure stylists. Of course, I source out caterers and rental companies, but I do all the necessary research to make it all happen. Then, my impeccable follow-through and detail is what drives it all home. Clients like that personal touch. My creative vision is just one of my secret weapons.

5) Have a call to action at the end of every pitch conversation. When you see an interest, hand them a business card and ask what's the best way to get on their calendar. My call to action is “Just Ask” — it’s simple, friendly, and fits my brand.

If you need me to help you craft the perfect elevator pitch, Just Ask! I can help with all the stylish elements and make you shine.
