Plane preparedness

Whenever I take an airplane ride (and this past year, there have been a lot) there are many things I bring in my essential bag to combat dehydration and dryness of skin and eyes.

After I get through security I immediately purchase a large bottle of water, which is more than 20ml.

In my carry-on bag, purse or small make-up bag I’ll include the following: (Remember to put these in the approved security clearance zip lock plastic bag)

  • Eye cream
  • Visine
  • Lip balm
  • Face cream
  • Hand cream

I apply the creams at least 2-3 times for cross-country flights. A great tip is to obtain some free sample facial moisturizers from cosmetic counters at places like Nordstrom or Neimans. The packets lay flat and do not take up much room at all. They’re the best for traveling! Plus, I like trying new products to see which ones I might prefer for the long haul. Key tip: Pack super flat samples or super small containers. You do not want your big containers of expensive creams to be taken away from the security people. That’s a no-no!

To avoid crankiness, sleep! Being the petite one that I am, I can sleep on most flights. That loss of oxygen makes me sleep like a baby even before takeoff. I know, kind of crazy. But I go with it and don’t fight it. In order for me to have a restful sleep I wear the eye patches (not like a pirate – silly!) purchased from a local spa. I also wear earplugs to block out the noise or I put in my ear buds and listen to soft music. Underneath my eye patches, I place TGF-B Eye Firming Masks which are eye pads placed right below my eyes to minimize any puffiness. I buy them from Rituals Aesthetic Skin Care and they work wonders.

To alleviate any headaches from dehydration I drink plenty of water (not alcohol!) and I also add Neuro in my water for energy. If it’s an overnight flight, I’ll drink Emergen'C in the morning for some energy. You name it, I have it to maintain this energizer bunny energy. Ha! I also will eat the FRS fruit chews in pomegranate flavor from REI and the raspberry PowerBar gummy chews. No time for a snooze after those!

What I also include in my little bag of tricks (which will soon be known as the "R" essential bag) are:

  • Mints
  • Tums
  • One-use toothbrushes with paste called WISP
  • Elastics if you have long hair to put into a pony or a messy chignon
  • Travel size makeup remover pads

Healthy and happy plane rides are here to stay!
