As we all know, sun exposure is damaging to our skin. But when you need your shoulders to shimmer in a gown, what’s a girl to do? Self-tanning products and spray tans are the answer! As your life stylist, let me recommend a few products and places to get your glow on. But first, here are a few basic tips to get your skin “faux tan” ready.
My Top 10 Tips
- Exfoliate with a salt or sugar scrub, a dry brush or even a wash cloth to take off any excess dry skin.
- If you have some brown spots (like I do!), put extra lotion on them before tanning as the tanning product will soak right in and highlight them even more.
- Do not wear underarm deodorant before applying self tanning lotion or getting a spray tan, as it can cause unevenness.
- Apply a light even layer of product all over your skin. Heavier layers causes some skin to look blotchy.
- Test an area of skin with self-tanning products first to see if it the color looks natural. The stomach is always a good place for testing!
- If you’re applying self-tanner on yourself, always use gloves as to not stain your hands.
- Before a self-tan, rub moisturizer in between your fingers and toes, on your elbows and the heels of your feet.
- The day after your tan, shower off all the excess color. If there are some spots that are darker than others, simply exfoliate.
- To keep your new glowing tan fresh, use a body balm every day. I like the one from Tata Harper.
- Try to get your spray tan in the late afternoon so you have all night to lay low in a comfy, flowy outfit as the tanning lotion or spray can be a little bit sticky feeling on the skin. Do not immediately put your clothes on, as it could stain them.
