From river walks, to mountain ranges, to open meadows and deep forests, day hiking can be pretty exquisite. But before you head out, make sure your day pack is in check! No matter where the day takes you, here are some essential items that you’ll need on the trail:
Layers
Bring a synthetic, sweat-wicking hoodie. Try the one from REI that has extra padding strategically placed on the back of your shoulders where the backpack straps land. Pull on the hoodie when it get’s cold and windy! Ladies, it comes in fun and fashionable colors and stripes, too!
2. Plenty of Water
Consider investing in a Camelbak. One can hold up to more than three liters of water depending on what type of hiking adventure you set out to explore. I also like wearing the athletic “not fanny pack” hydration belts by Nathan which hold two water bottles.
3. The Right Footwear
Be sure to wear hiking boots or terrain-appropriate shoes. Try them on with the socks you’ll wear them with and make sure they’ll be comfortable. I love my Merrell’s.
4. Extra Socks
Pack an extra pair of wool hiking socks in the event the ones you’re wearing on the hike get wet.
ExOfficio has awesome “bug off” ones.
5. Rain Coat & Rain Pants
It’s best to be prepared for anything. I think my bright fuscia pink raincoat would scare off any animal! I don’t leave home without my Arcteryx!
6. First-Aid Kit
I can equip you with an awesome “R” bag that includes Tetons Tic-Tacs and more! Just Ask me.
7. High-Energy Snacks
Don’t just bring high protein bars. You’ll get sick of them by the end of the trail hike. Bring something you’ll really enjoy like a piece of pizza. I’m serious!
8. An Arsenal of Sprays
Bug spray, sweat-proof sunscreen spray, bear spray. But, sorry, no hair spray! Ha!
9. Tissue
Do I need to explain why?
10. Gadgets
Grab your camera, iPhone/smart phone, GoPro, binoculars, headlamp, flashlight, wrist Sherpa. If you have room for it, pack it!
Enjoy adventuring off the beaten track!
