When I lived in Portland, Oregon among the redwood trees and stumps, Stumptown was its’ nickname. But I recently stumbled upon another Stumptown…Guerneville, CA, which is located in the Russian River Valley and also known for its’ giant redwood stumps left by local loggers. Let me see if I can stump you with a few trivia questions about the Russian River Valley in Northern California.
Question 1: What great modern, pampering and relaxing boutique hotel is only 25 miles from San Francisco in West Sonoma County?
Stumped?
Boon Hotel + Spa. This hotel in the boonies (ah, now I know why they named it Boon!) has simple rooms around a solar-heated pool and is very close to great hiking trails. You can even get a massage here!
Question 2: What beach gives you great access to a coastal hike outside of Jenner, CA?
Stumped?
Shell Beach. This moderately easy coastal hike has striking views of the Northern California coastline. For additional hiking amongst the stumps, I suggest the Armstrong Redwoods!
Question 3: Where can you get bubbles galore outside Sebastopol that’s best known for their sparkling wines?
Stumped?
Iron Horse Vineyards. This exquisite property is a must-see! It’s a beautiful and windy drive to get there, but it’s worth the icy flutes of champagne at the tastings. Also, try Joseph Phelps Vineyards for their signature estate-grown blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (and Petit Verdot and Merlot), called, Insignia.
Question 4: What Japanese-style spa has a meditation garden and enzyme baths in Freestone, CA?
Stumped?
The Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. I highly recommend you make an appointment with Ginger for a therapeutic massage and then take some time to walk around the meditation grounds. It’s incredibly spiritual and you have no idea what a gem this place is until you take a look inside. Namaste.
Question 5: Where is the best food to pick up and take out for a grandiose picnic in Guerneville, CA?
Stumped?
Big Bottom Market. I suggest ordering one of their specialty sandwiches, pack up some pickles and chips and don’t forget to get the homemade whoopie pies! They have wonderful sides, too like the lentil salad. Yum! Side note: Restaurateur and Hotelier, Crista Luedtke is owner of this gourmet deli slash market PLUS Boon hotel + spa PLUS Boon eat + drink PLUS the new tequila bar called, El Barrio. She has it all going on. Boon-yah!
Question 6: Who should visit a place nicknamed Stumptown?
Stumped?
I think Stumptown is perfect for women who need a girlfriend getaway and couples who want a romantic hideaway. Need more personalized activity or travel tips for the Stumptown area? Just Ask!
Happy Stumping!
