Robin Laub, a Life Stylist

Clean, Mean and Lean—Part 1

As the brand new year begins, I’ve adapted a few new regimens. Now remember, this is what works for me in my lifestyle. This is what makes me feel good. It’s my own self-care regimen I use to try and maintain a stress-free lifestyle and good mental health while working, volunteering and being a mom (my favorite job). This information is from my own research and the steps I’ve taken to enhance my healthy lifestyle. It may not work for you. But, hopefully, it inspires you to find your own regimen.

This will be a two-part series of lifestyle health and wellness information. Today, I’ll focus on some new eating and drinking habits. For Part 2, I’ll share what I’ve learned from the G.O.A.T., Tom Brady and his new book, TB12 Method.

Now, on to Part 1.

On Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle blog Goop, she suggests eating clean and recommends a meal delivery service called Sakara. So, I tried it.

Early in the morning, a fun and fashionable black cooler bag was delivered to my doorstep. Inside was my dinner for that night. I only tried the one-week trial and I was already impressed. Also included in the chic and fully recyclable bag was some detox teas and some detox and beauty water concentrates to enhance my usual water. They included trace minerals and chlorophyll for detoxification and to get that, “sexy Sakara glow!” Sakara’s very words!

After a workout, I filled a glass with 8 oz. of water, added five squirts of the Detox Water concentrate and drank it in one gulp. It simply added all of the great minerals that I might have lost in my workout. It tasted okay. But, remarkably I’ve been feeling better and not so exhausted and sore after my workouts.

The caffeine free detox teas were also wonderful. They’re good for when you feel like having a snack. I put some honey in mine for that added extra sweetness. I didn’t say cut out sugar! ha! Remember, this is my lifestyle routine and everyone can do whatever fits their lifestyle.

Besides the detox teas, I also highly recommend the Youth and Beauty tea, which is a combination of 14 herbs such as Eleuthero (which makes you smarter!) and wild cherry (to heal your body). There’s also catuaba bark (used by Brazilians as an aphrodisiac).

As for the food, I loved everything during my trial except for the celeriac soup and veggies. The Emerald Wrap with the daily greens felt like I was having a picnic in the vegetable garden and the salad dressing was out of this world. I used it to dip the wrap in for an extra boost of flavor. I also ordered a breakfast and loved the coconut praline granola with the cacao mylk (that’s not a misspelling! ha!).

What I really learned about eating clean and whole foods was that it’s so important to know what you put into your body. It’s as simple as that! I feel stronger at Pure Barre classes (Alyssa, don’t work me any harder now that you’re reading this! Ha!). When I feel fatigued, I now know it’s not because I’m hungry, it’s due to dehydration. So, all I need to do is drink more water! I also learned that it’s very important to eat your leafy greens every day.

Yes, we should all limit sugar, alcohol and caffeine. But honestly, I’m still going to have my glass of Veuve—but maybe I’ll just wait to have it on the weekend. And, yes, caffeine is dehydrating, but I still need my sips of blue bottle coffee. I’m not counting my grams of sugar each day. Instead, I’m focusing on eating more whole fresh fruits and less candy and cookies. One cookie isn't going to destroy you though.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this lifestyle health and wellness series.
